Kajiken is a Japanese restaurant chain known for abura soba (brothless ramen), but it is still a new idea for most people in the States. While classic ramen is popular around the Bay Area, Kajiken is introducing a new type of “ramen” for the people. The idea of “traditional and new” is reflected in interior design as well. The classical Japanese elements are interpreted in a more commentary way. The double-high ceiling with hanging paper lanterns creates a focal point. The large portion of wood veneer covering the lower part of the wall compressed the space in height to make the restaurant cozier and function as a backdrop for the customers to showcase their meals on social media.
